School of Science is one of the oldest faculties of Xi’an Jiaotong University. The predecessor of School of Science of Xi’an Jiaotong University was Science School of Jiaotong University in Shanghai, which was founded in 1931 and renamed School of Science in 1937. In 1994, School of Science was reconstructed and include Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. In 2011, the mathematics discipline was separated to be School of Mathematics and Statistics.

Currently, School of Science is a research school consisting of 9 major categories of disciplines: applied physics, materials of physics, optical information technology and science, college physics, physics laboratory, applied chemistry, material chemistry, college chemistry and chemistry laboratory. It also includes talented student class in physics and talented student class in biology and chemistry. The school has a faculty and staffs of 212 people including 168 full-time teachers, of whom 56 are professors, 64 are associate professors and 48 are lecturers, 10 postdocs and 31 experimental technicians. What’s more, there are 82 young full-time faculties who are less than 40 years old and they all have received a doctor's degree, accounting for 48.8 percent of the total number of teachers in the school.

School of Science now has 665 full-time enrolled students, 174 Ph.D students and 281 master students, with annually enrolling about 45 Ph.D students and 110 masters. For physics, undergraduate programs include applied physics, optics information of Tech. & Sci. and materials of physics. Postgraduate programs include condensed matter physics, theoretical physics, atomic, molecular & optical physics and materials physics & chemistry. School of Science has 4 key research facilities: MOST International Joint Research Center for new materials, MOE Key Laboratory for Non-equilibrium Synthesis and Modulation of Condensed Matter, Key Laboratory of Advanced Functional Materials and Meso-Physics of Shannxi Province, Key Laboratory for Quantum Information and Quantum Optoelectronic Devices of Shannxi Province, Xi’an Key Laboratory of Sustainable Energy Materials Chemistry. From 2012 to 2017, school got a total of 126 national programs (NSF) and ¥71.47 million Funds were approved, including 13 major national projects, the 973 program of the ministry of science and technology, the basic defense research program, and Key Grants.

  From 2012 to 2017, school has published over 1,030 SCI-indexed articles. According to the data of ESI database in May 2018, our school has 29 ESI articles in this issue, including 8 articles on engineering, 8 articles on materials science, 4 articles on physics, 6 articles on chemistry, 2 articles on computer science, 2 articles on mathematics and 1 article on agricultural science. Up to now, more than 90 authorized invention patents have been granted. And the school also includes 10 key teaching centers.

  Program for talented students in Physics was selected the first batch of “training pilot program for top students in basic subjects” by the ministry of education in 2009. In 2008, the ministry of education of China initiated a national project: “Program of Training Talented Students in Basic Sciences including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer of Science”. Since 2009, our school has been responsible for the "first-rate student training program of basic subjects” and specifically responsible for the training and management of students in the physics experimental class. Professor Fuli Li and professor Hong Gao have successively acted as the project leaders of this class. The goal of this program is to select talented students, who are keenly interested in the fundamental research and provide the students with the most excellent education resources, dispatch the students into world-leading research groups in their early academic career and cultivate the students to grow up leading scientists in the fundamental research field and to be capable of attacking basic questions in science and engineering fields. The international environment is one of key points to make sure the success of this program and have 12 international institution signed agreement.   School of Science also establishes Institute of Physics and Chemistry (IPC) in Western China Science and Technology Innovation Harbor. IPC includes six sub-institutes:

1、Institute of Sci. & Tech. for Optical and Particle Beam: Performing researches on the quantum coherent manipulation and its applications in quantum information and computation.

2、Institute of Structural and Functional Modulation of Matter: 1. Focusing on surface and interface engineering of materials, and utilizing these effects to modulate material properties; 2. Discovering the dynamic structures and functions of soft condensed matters.

3、Institute of Frontier Theoretical Physics: Focusing on the fundamental theoretical physics including particle physics, nuclear Physics, gravity and cosmology physics

4、Institute of Molecular Science and Applied Chemistry: The method of non-destructive analysis of colored paints was established, and the method of non-destructive spectroscopy was used to analyze the structure of architectural paints, tomb paintings, grotto paintings and the composition and authenticity of the paints and components with different imaging and multi-modality therapeutic functions were hybridized and assembled to prepare nano-drugs with multi-modality diagnostic and therapeutic functions.

5、Institute of Sustainable Energy Chemistry: A series of achievements have been made in the molecular design, performance regulation and structure-functionality relationship establishment of high-efficiency electro-optic conversion small molecules and polymers of Ir and Pt complexes and multidimensional nanomaterials were fabricated to solve the key problems such as packing density, charge-discharge stability and electronic transmission path control.

6、Institute of Organic and Polymer Science: With functional fluoropolymers as the main research object, the precise synthesis of new fluoropolymers was realized by developing new chemical reaction methods and new mechanisms, and their aggregated structure and electrical properties were regulated and their applications in various fields. With the development of new chemical reaction methods and mechanisms, the dynamic polymeric materials were precise synthesized. Its aggregated structure and reversible processing, recycling, self-repairing and shape memory are regulated.
